FLEMING ISLAND, Florida – One person has died after a vehicle crashed into a retention pond on Fleming Island early Sunday morning, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
The Florida Highway Patrol website shows soldiers were called in around 3:25 a.m. for the fatal crash in Neptune Park, off Thunderbolt Road.
The sheriff’s office said his dive team responded. In addition, Clay County Fire and Rescue was on the scene.
Later that morning, a tow truck pulled the car, a silver four-door Nissan Altima, from the retention pond.
Several neighbors told News4Jax that they often hear cars racing down Thunderbolt Road leading to the park where the pond is located. They said Sunday around 2 a.m. was no different.
“They’re just racing in the street, and it’s very scary,” said a neighbor, who declined to be identified. “It’s right behind the school, and there are a lot of young children in this community.
The highway patrol is investigating.
