1 dead and 2 injured in the explosion of a house in Indiana


JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WAVE) – One person died and two others were injured after the explosion of a house in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Sunday morning.

According to the Jeffersonville Fire Department, the call was launched shortly before 5 am, in the 900 block of Assembly Road Road, in the Capital Hills neighborhood. A Facebook message initially indicated that the scene was taking place in block 900 of Senate Avenue, but a fire service tweet corrected the address to indicate Assembly Road Block 900 .

Jeffersonville Fire Chief Eric Hedrick told a WAVE 3 News photographer that the original house of the blast was "completely damaged".

"Twelve to fifteen or twenty houses have been damaged," said Hedrick. "I would say that five to six of them have suffered considerable damage and may not be able to be busy. We are doing our secondary research. That's where we go back and look at all affected residents to make sure there is no one there. Further research to make sure no one is there. "

The name of the person killed was not immediately available. Hedrick said two other victims were being treated at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore issued the following statement:

"The city of Jeffersonville is deeply saddened by the explosion of his home on Sunday. At that time, we know that one life was lost and others were injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the entire neighborhood of Capitol Hills.

We greatly appreciate our first responders and depend on them at a time like this.

We are a strong community and we are fortunate to live in an area that cares about its neighbors. It concerns us all.

Representatives of the gas company Vectren confirmed that the house that had exploded was a customer of Vectren. Officials from the gas company said they were on the scene to assist in the investigation and discontinued service in 14 more homes in the area.

The cause of the explosion is not clear.

The Jeffersonville Police Department and the Indiana State Police are among the agencies that investigated this incident.
