One person died and others were seriously injured after a tour bus crashed to the Grand Canyon in Arizona on Friday, the sheriff’s office said.
The tour bus, which was operated by a Las Vegas company, carried 48 people, including the driver, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
It rolled over and landed sideways at around 12:20 p.m. on Diamond Bar Road towards Grand Canyon National Park, officials said.
One person was killed, two others were in critical condition and seven others were also taken to a hospital with less serious injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
Thirty-three other people on the bus sustained minor injuries.
The name of the tour bus company and its exact origin were not released in the sheriff’s statement. The accident is under investigation, he said.
Pictures of the scene showed the bus on its side. Some on social media described helping to get people off the bus.
The Arizona Red Cross tweeted that it was monitoring the situation. The agency provides shelter and other forms of assistance to people in need following accidents and disasters.
Grand Canyon West is approximately 126 km from downtown Las Vegas. It sits on the Hualapai Preserve west of Grand Canyon National Park and has attractions such as the Skywalk, which stretches approximately 70 feet above the rim of the canyon.
The Hualapai Tribe said in a statement that they and their company, the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation, are “deeply saddened” by the fatal accident.
“As a people, our hearts go out to those who are so deeply affected,” the tribe said. “We wish a speedy recovery to those in need of medical attention.”
