1 dead, several injured in Chicago-area hotel shooting

BLOOMINGDALE, Illinois – A shootout early Saturday at a large rally at a suburban Chicago hotel left one dead and several injured, police said.

Bloomingdale’s director of public safety, Frank Giammarese, said the shooting took place during a “sort of big meeting” among guests at the Indian Lakes Hotel in Bloomingdale. Investigators were still piecing together what had happened, he said, but “it seemed there were two different groups attending different events at the hotel” when “something happened. passed and that’s when the shooting took place, mostly in the halls of the hotel. “

People were fleeing the hotel when officers arrived at around 2:35 a.m. in response to a report of gunfire on the fifth floor. Officers found “several apparent gunshot victims” inside, police said in a press release.

James McGill Jr., 27, of Chicago, was pronounced dead in a hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

No less than six other people were hit by gunfire, but the exact number is unknown as several people fled – including one or more possible suspects, Giammarese said. No police officer was shot dead, he said.

He said there had been “lingering concerns” about large gatherings at the hotel in the recent past.

Located about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago, the five-story Indian Lakes Hotel has 300 newly renovated guest rooms and over 650 square meters of event space, according to the resort’s website.
