A dozen people were injured, including 10 police officers in Chicago, in a multi-vehicle crash Saturday night in the Austin district of the West Side.
Around 10 pm, two Chicago police vehicles – a van and an unmarked SUV – were involved in an accident with several other vehicles on Division Street and Laramie Avenue, according to Chicago police.
Ten officers were taken to a nearby hospital and a man and a woman, civilians, were transported to the US-Norwegian hospital, police said. All 12 had to survive.
Corey Jackson stated that he was cycling in the east of the Division when a Chicago police vehicle nearly hit him before hitting at least one other vehicle, which caused a chain collision. Once aware of the danger, he jumped off the bike and threw himself on the sidewalk, he said.
"I was just in shock," he said. "When the police cars crashed, I came back to reality. I was a few inches from them. I could have lost my life tonight.
The intersection of Laramie and Division was closed to traffic while officers were investigating the accident. The neighbors lined the sidewalks of the two streets to observe the crime scene, where several ambulances had picked up the wounded. Several people feared that the accident would become fatal.
One woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said that it appeared that several police cars were reacting at high speed to an incident nearby just before the accident.
"I think it's just the worst road accident in history," she said. "It's just, I knew these cars were going to bump."
After the attack, Jackson waited behind the police tape, hoping that an officer would help him get his bike back, which he would have left at the crime scene. He said that witnessing the speed of police cars in these streets was not new, but the extent of Saturday's accident was.
"I have never seen any accidents so crazy," said Jackson. "It's my first time."
Chicago police did not disclose the details of the accident.
