A 10-year-old Texas girl died after contracting a brain-eating amoeba, her family said.

Lily Mae Before "is gone to be with Jesus," said her aunt, Loni Yadon, Monday morning in a statement.

"She led the good fight and built an army of prayer warriors around the world," Yadon wrote in a Facebook message.

Lily went swimming during Labor Day weekend in the Brazos River, near Waco, where her family reported that she had contracted an amoeba Naegleria fowleri, a unicellular organism also called "cerebral" amoeba.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is commonly found in freshwaters such as ponds, lakes and rivers and in the soil.

About a week later, on September 8, Lily began to suffer from fever, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

"At that time, our baby is completely healed and in the arms of Jesus," Yadon told NBC News in a statement. "We want everyone to know that we appreciate their prayers, their love and their support."

Because of the scarcity of infection and the difficulty of initial detection, about 75% of diagnoses are made after the patient's death, the CDC says.
