A senior official in Operation Warp Speed - the massive U.S. government effort to develop and distribute a vaccine for the coronavirus – confidently predicted Monday that anyone who wants a vaccine will be able to get one by June.
Lt. Gen. Paul Ostrowski (retired), director of supply, production and distribution for Operation Warp Speed, was asked in an interview on MSNBC about his expectations for vaccination by June :
“
“100% of Americans who want the vaccine will have received the vaccine by then. We will have over 300 million doses available to the American public long before that date.
“
It was not clear whether he was referring to the first dose of the vaccine or to both doses. The COVID-19 vaccination process will take about six weeks, with one month before two vaccinations, and then about two weeks to make sure the antibodies have developed.
Monday, Moderna Inc. MRNA,
said he intended to seek emergency use authorization for his vaccination from US and European regulators. If approved, her vaccinations could start in the United States by mid-December. Pfizer Inc. PFE,
and BioNTech SE BNTX,
are also expected to seek authorization for their vaccine in the coming days.
Essential workers and those most at risk will receive the vaccine first, with mass availability to the general U.S. population not expected until spring.
