More than 100 people gathered at a boisterous party at an opulent mansion in Granite Bay, a very affluent suburb of Sacramento, on New Years Eve, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Department.
The Sheriff’s Department responded to a noise complaint at the party in the gated community of Los Lagos Estates facing Lake Folsom. The deputies did not issue any citation.
“The deputies spoke with the owner and told them not to do it,” said Angela Musallam, a public information officer for the sheriff’s department. “We weren’t called after that first contact. It was our first call. If we had to go out multiple times, we would have issued citations.”
Videos and photos from the party posted to social media show crowds of people celebrating and drinking without masks, despite stay-at-home orders from the state banning gatherings to curb the spread of coronavirus amid ‘a global pandemic.
Although the party clearly violated the order, Mussalam said the department did not have the power to execute it.
“The sheriff’s office does not have the power to enforce these guidelines,” Musallam said. “It should be the state at the end of the day.
The house was previously owned by Hollywood comic actor Eddie Murphy from 1998 to 2007, according to an article on SFGATE. Murphy sold the property after his divorce from model and Sacramento native Nicole Mitchell.
“It’s a very affluent community,” Mussalam said. “There is no access, unless the guard has your name. Seems like it was more of an exclusive party but obviously a big reunion.
Placer County is part of the Greater Sacramento area where the stay-at-home order remains in effect. On Saturday, the order was extended indefinitely. The order goes into effect when intensive care unit capacity falls below 15% in the area and can be lifted if the four-week projection of intensive care capacity is above 15%, according to the department. of California Public Health.
The California Department of Public Health said the state continues to see alarming positive case rates statewide and record numbers of people hospitalized and requiring intensive care due to COVID-19. In response to the Granite Bay party, the department said, “Now is not the time to be complacent – now is the time to step up efforts to protect ourselves, our families and our communities from this virus.”
