The Bears got an absolute steal in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft with wide receiver Darnell Mooney, and head coach Matt Nagy knows it.
“I’m telling you, we knew in the fifth round we were getting a steal,” he said ahead of practice on Saturday. “We knew it. … He has proven so far that he is what we thought he was.
Mooney has just wrapped up an impressive rookie season, where he won the No. 2 role over Allen Robinson in week two of the regular season alone – with no real offseason to prepare.
With Mooney entering his second year, the expectations for the young broad are even higher. And he’s already showing signs of his continued progress during training camp.
According to Nagy, Mooney “is on fire” with his run so far in training camp, where he’s certainly made some impressive moves and catches from Andy Dalton and Justin Fields.
“Mooney is on fire right now with his current run,” Nagy said. “He’s running routes right now that I hadn’t really seen him and A-Rob run those routes.”

While Mooney’s rookie season was encouraging, there is greater excitement for what he can accomplish in the sophomore year, which also included more off-season work with Robinson, who took him under his belt. wing.
