More than 100 inmates took over a section of the City Justice Center in downtown St. Louis, injuring a correctional officer at the facility, officials said.
The incident began around 2:30 a.m. Saturday on the fourth floor of the prison, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Jacob Long, spokesperson for Mayor Lyda Krewson, told NBC News the situation continues.
Police and firefighters were at the scene and closed off the area surrounding the building, NBC affiliate KSDK reported.
The group of around 115 prisoners threw things out of broken windows and started a small fire inside the prison, Long said. They also flooded floors and clogged toilets, according to the Post-Dispatch.
Long told KSDK it was a “very dangerous disruption”.
Chairs and other items were strewn across the street and at least one car had a broken windshield, the outlet reported. Several inmates were seen holding signs and singing.
A male prison officer was injured in the incident and taken to hospital in an unknown condition.
As of Friday, there were 633 detainees at the Justice Center. Police told the KSDK that all detainees were safe inside the building.
