On Wednesday, in response to a question from Deadline, Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer confirmed that at least a dozen local residents had been infected with Covid-19 after being fully vaccinated.
“Yes, it is possible to test positive for the virus after being fully vaccinated,” Ferrer reported. She estimated that the number of post-vaccination infections is probably “very low”.
Ferrer said all of the so-called “groundbreaking cases” of infection detected in the county have occurred in long-term care facilities. In all, 12 fully vaccinated people were infected. Four of them were residents of these facilities and eight were staff.
“I’m sure there are other places [in L.A. County] because I know across the country that there have been more [breakthrough] cases, ”Ferrer said before noting that the cases detected in long-term care facilities were not likely due to a lack of precaution, but rather because the data from these environments is better.

“It’s a place where we have very good data in part thanks to our strong partnership with long-term care facilities.”
Ferrer also added: “The vast majority of people who have tested positive after being fully vaccinated are asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms.
“This is LA County, we don’t know of anyone who has been hospitalized or – sadly – has died.”
But, as with other cases of Covid-19 infection, the data is very incomplete, she said, making an overall assessment “a difficult question to answer”.
Earlier Wednesday, 39 groundbreaking cases were reported in Sonoma County over the past two and a half months, according to county officials.
It is not known what caused the 12 infections, but one source may be vaccine-resistant variants. The number of variants is increasing in Los Angeles, although it’s unclear which – if any – could be vaccine resistant.
National, state and local health officials all observe that, however, vaccine resistance among the variants is far from total. Vaccines always offer a good level of protection.
“There is nothing out there that is a red flag yet. We’re obviously going to be keeping an eye on that very, very carefully. But I don’t see anything that changes our conception of the vaccine and its effectiveness, ”Dr Anthony Fauci said at a recent White House briefing.
