Tyson Foods Inc. has recalled about 11.8 million pounds of frozen chicken strips because the products could be contaminated with metal, the United States Department of Agriculture said Saturday.

The government agency said it was an extension of the March 21 recall, which had identified 69,093 pounds of tapes.

The affected products were manufactured between October 1, 2018 and March 8, 2019 and have "expiry dates" from October 1, 2019 to March 7, 2020, the notification states. The establishment number "P-7221" is printed on the back of the product packaging.

The problem was discovered after the agency had received two consumer complaints about "foreign materials" in chicken strip products, the statement said. The USDA refers to "metal pieces" as possible contaminant.

In addition to chicken products bearing the name Tyson, the recall also includes certain Publix, Kirkwood, Giant Eagle, Hannaford, Food Lion, Best Choice, Great Value, Meijer and Spare Time products. The products have been shipped to retailers nationwide.

The agency is "now aware of six complaints during this period regarding similar metal parts, three of which report oral injuries."

The USDA Food Inspection and Safety Service has classified this ad as "Class I Recall". These recalls are considered to pose a high risk to health – a "situation in which there is a reasonable likelihood that the use of the product will result in serious and harmful consequences to health or death".

The agency is worried that some products will end up in consumers' freezers.

"Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them," says the recall notice. "These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase."

More information on how to identify the recalled products is included in a Visual guide published by the USDA and a chart with a list of items.
