The midday incident occurred in a fireworks storage area of the Roswell International Air Center, just south of the city, said police captain Lance Bateman.
According to Bateman, two firefighters were transported to hospitals, one with serious injuries and the other with serious injuries. Ten others were treated on site for minor injuries.
The fire was largely extinguished, but the Roswell Fire Department remained on the scene, throwing water at hot spots, said Bateman.
Authorities are investigating the cause, but the blast appears to be accidental, Bateman told the press.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) assists state police in the investigation and the FBI's New Mexico external office offered its assistance .
Roswell Mayor Dennis Kintigh said that there had been no discussion about the impact of this incident on the July 4th celebration, with the focus being on injured firefighters.
