Residents looking for a coronavirus vaccine will soon have a choice of 12 Walmart and Sam’s Club stores, the company says.
When the company receives the vaccine, working with New Jersey health officials, the retail giant will join six mega-centers and 200 other sites around the state.
Walmart sites could help, after New Jersey was criticized for having a slower rollout than dozens of other states as it continues to grapple with a second wave of the pandemic, data from the Centers for Disease Control shows and Prevention (CDC).
The announcement is part of “Walmart’s growing efforts at the request of the state to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to state-designated priority groups,” Walmart spokesperson Alexa Cangialosi said in a statement. .
“So far, we have about 100 stores and Sam’s Clubs in over half a dozen states administering vaccines to those the state has deemed eligible, including here in New Jersey,” says she.
Stores and clubs in the following locations are preparing to administer vaccines to priority populations: Pleasantville, Toms River, North Brunswick, Burlington Township, Pennsville, Franklin, Garfield, Hamilton, Vineland, Linden, North Bergen and Boonton.
Currently, vaccines are available for healthcare workers, long-term care residents and others living in the congregation, as well as police and firefighters. Also included are people 65 years of age or older and people 16 to 64 years of age with special health problems, including smokers.
Almost all sites in the state have asked people to pre-register through the state website. Many have said they will have dates several weeks away.
The announcement comes as the state reported 4,613 more coronavirus cases and 17 deaths on Sunday. It was the same day that the State Department of Health released new predictive models that showed Sunday could be the peak of the second wave of the pandemic in the state.
Whether this bump occurs could depend on how quickly New Jersey receives and dispenses vaccine doses. Gov. Phil Murphy has said he wants 70% of the state’s eligible population – nearly 5 million people – to be vaccinated by May.
Walmart also has a dedicated vaccine website and store locator.
At full capacity, the company expects to be able to deliver 10 to 13 million doses per month nationwide when supply and allocations permit, Walmart officials said in a statement.
