Today marked the eleventh practice of the 2021 Philadelphia Eagles training camp. The Birds were back at the NovaCare Complex for a final practice before their first preseason game. Here is what I observed! (Stay tuned for our daily BGN Radio practice recap podcast which will be posted here once it goes live.)
• No tampons. Practice was on the lighter side.
• JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Hurts had a good day. Especially when it came to connecting with the tight ends of the Eagles. Hurts threw a laser at Zach Ertz in the middle for a 15-yard gain. He also snatched a few from Dallas Goedert, who fought a very tight cover and a Darius Slay striptease attempt on a rep. It was encouraging to see Hurts succeed in this regard since there are questions about his ability to work steadily in midfield.
The only time Hurts really put the ball in danger was when he felt the pressure from Javon Hargrave, who blew Sua Opeta up and threw the ball into a sea of bodies in midfield. He was lucky that Steve Nelson had dropped it instead of picking it up. A throw from Hurts to Jalen Reagor on a curl course was knocked down by Slay. Hurts also fought off Quez Watkins 1-on-1 where the receiver didn’t even get a chance to lay down for the ball.
• EAGLE INJURY UPDATES: Alexis has covered some of this already, but I wanted to expose it here as well.
Good news: Brandon Brooks (hamstring strain) was taking some representatives in team exercises. Isaac Seumalo (hamstring) went from “day-to-day” participation to “limited” participation. Big developments for the starting offensive line. DeVonta Smith (knee) was doing rehabilitation work in the form of a light jog on lateral terrain.
Bad news: André Dillard left training during the position exercises and did not return after being watched in the tent. The left tackle competition was already a searing loss for Dillard and any injury only further cemented his defeat. K’Von Wallace was also evaluated in the tent before failing to return. Ryan Kerrigan has had thumb surgery and will be out for 7-10 days. Craig James (foot) missed practice while walking around in a walking boot; it is “from day to day”. The signing of undrafted rookie free agent Jhamon Aubson had not been training recently. Michael Walker, who had previously suffered a foot injury, was taken in a great performance in WR against DB 1 on 1.
• Quez Watkins had a nice jump reception on a Joe Flacco throw to the center. He failed to make another attempt at diving. After practice, Slay was asked which receiver really stood out in the camp and he went with Quez. Really deserves more chances with the first unit of the team.
• Tyree Jackson continues to be active, basically grabbing anything that comes his way. It’s pretty funny how quickly he gained quarterback confidence despite being new to the tight end position. A very large blanket. (Relatively speaking, at least. I’m taller than Tyree, so he’s short for me.)
• Travis Fulgham had a bad fall. Too much.
• Speaking of crashes, Miles Sanders had another 1v1. Just not a good summer for his hands.
• Drain WR’s 1: 1 scores against DB: Nelson forced a check by disrupting the ball as JJ Arcega-Whiteside fell to the ground. JJAW dusted off Michael Jacquet III. Reagor stammered back that opened him up for a catch on Kevon Seymour. Reagor took a slight step on Nelson but dropped what would have been a hold over the shoulder. Slay was coaching Zach McPhearson after the rookie was called in by Dennard Wilson for grabbing a fist full of a receiver’s jersey.
• Derek Barnett completely murdered Kerryon Johnson in pass protection. Thrown the race to the ground. Johnson was a little shaken after the play.
• Greg Ward detonated a block which allowed Avonte Maddox to instantly loop Reagor after the receiver picked up a bubble screen pass.
• Nick Mullens had a very bad low pitch which should have been picked but was knocked down by Shaun Bradley.
• Andre Patton had a nice catch sliding down the straight sideline. Patton has done quite well for himself as a person who projects himself as a camp corps. Maybe he’s more than that?
• I saw Boston Scott drop three punts. Not ideal.
NEXT: The Eagles have a walkthrough Wednesday that is closed to media. Next, they will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first preseason game Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles will be on leave on Friday before resuming practice on Saturday.
