13 reasons why star Tommy Dorfman announces she is a trans woman

Tommy Dorfman, the actor who played Ryan Shaver in 13 reasons why, did an interview with TIME, where she opened up about being a trans woman. The actor hadn’t publicly announced that she was a trans woman prior to the interview, but as interviewer Torrey Peters notes, fans had noticed a change in the actor’s style and appearance.

Dorfman explains to Peters that she doesn’t necessarily do it. see it as her coming out, but rather she says it is “a reintroduction to me as a woman, having transitioned medically.” She adds: “Coming out is always considered a big eye-opener, but I’ve never been away. Today it is clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she / she. My name is Tommy. Dorman has also confirmed that she will not be changing her name, as she bears the name of her mother’s brother who died shortly after her birth, so she feels “very attached to that name”.

She explains that although she didn’t feel safe enough to talk about being trans before, she used Instagram as a “daily time capsule – a capsule that shows a living body in a more fluid space.” But, the talk surrounding her body began to become overwhelming, and as a public figure, she realized that not clarifying her identity as a woman could “strip [her] freedom to control [her] own story.

The actor has also opened up about his upcoming role in Lena Dunham’s upcoming film. Pointed stick, saying Dunham gave her her first role as a woman, which was “so exciting and validating”. In addition to appearing in Pointed stick, Dorfman will direct an adaptation of Mason Deaver’s novel I wish you the best, about a non-binary teenager named Ben who was kicked out of his home after talking to his parents and must move in with their distant sister.
