Tommy Dorfman, better known as Ryan Shaver in Netflix 13 reasons why, turned out to be a transgender woman.
In an interview with Time Dorfman explained that over the past year she had “identified and experienced privately as a woman – a trans woman.”
She also explained why it was important to document her transition on Instagram in order to control her narrative.
“I live in this other version of coming out where I don’t feel safe enough to talk about it, so I just do it,” Dorfman said. “But I recognize that the transition is beautiful. Why not let the world see what it looks like? So I kept a time capsule on Instagram instead – one that shows a living body in a more fluid space.
However, stepping out and officially announcing his transition seemed important as a public figure. “With this medical transition, there was a talk about my body, and it started to get overwhelming. So recently I looked at examples of other people who have become trans, ”she said.
“There’s the version I couldn’t really afford to do, which is to disappear for two years and come back with a new name, a new face and a new body. But that’s not what I wanted.
Along with the interview, Dorfman took to Instagram to announce his transition.
“I am delighted to introduce myself again as the woman I am today. my pronouns are she / she, ”she wrote.
“I am especially grateful to every trans person who has walked this path, broken down barriers and risked their lives to live authentically and radically like themselves before me.”
In his interview with Time, Dorfman said it was “impossible to separate my personal and professional transition.”
She will appear in her first role as a woman in Lena Dunham’s upcoming directorial effort Pointed stick.
