PROVO – There was an eight-month build-up before Thursday's Utah-BYU match at LaVell Edwards Stadium – it was the first time the two rivals met in an inaugural match – while the Cougars wanted to end to a loss of eight games Strie aux Utes.
But Utah No. 14 has extended its winning streak against BYU in a game that, in many ways, is remarkably similar to the previous eight with a stellar 30-12 win.
Strangely, in the middle of the fourth quarter, a torrential rain fell from the sky and the match was suspended due to a late lightning strike at 9:01 of the end. After 54 minutes, the game resumed at 12:05 in front of 15,000 spectators.
BYU's offense has not even touched the ball in the last nine minutes, Utah relying on its race-finish game to time. As the last few seconds escaped – the Utes happily took a knee instead of giving it up – Utah fans chanted, "Nine in a row! Nine in a row!

And the ten years of frustration of the Cougars will continue for at least a year.
Utah's ninth consecutive victory on BYU is the longest winning streak of both teams in the rivalry.
Similar to Utah's previous victories in this nine-game series, the Utes scored 20 points on three BYU turnovers.
Cougar quarterback Zach Wilson completed 21 of his 33 passes for 208 yards, but he also pitched a pair of pick-six – which has become a staple of the rivalry. Since 2010, Utah has recorded nine interception returns for touchdowns against BYU.
The former cougar Francis Bernard scored a choice in six in the first period for the Utes.
Utah running back Zack Moss had 29 yards for a total of 181 yards and a touchdown.
To open the second half, Utah leading 9-6, the Utes kicked off and quickly rolled onto BYU's defense, scoring 75 yards for a touchdown touched by a run 2 yards from Jaylen Dixon. Utah took a 16-6 advantage with 9:47 to make the third quarter.
At that time, the crowd of 61,626 people was killed, as Cougar fans resigned themselves to the fact that this game, once again, belonged to the Utes.
The Cougars committed several unwelcome criminal penalties. For example, at the end of the third quarter, the Utes faced the third and 27, but scored a first drop due to a facial mask penalty that gave Utah a new lease on life.
At the end of the race, the goal of the opposing team Ute Placekicker Andrew Strauch ran 25 yards to the right. But two pieces later, a bad exchange between Wilson and Ty'Son Williams caused a fumble recovered by Mika Tafua of Utes.
Utah capitalized on a four-yard touchdown led by Moss to give the Utes a 23-6 lead.
Then comes the second choice of the night for Utah, while Julian Blackmon scored 39 points for a touchdown. Utah 30, BYU 6.
Williams scored on a 10-yard run to score 30-12 before the lightning time.
BYU's attack was blocked at Utah 41 after the victory defeat in the 4 – 4 victory. Utah took advantage of the field's favorable position and scored the first goal with a 41-yard center Strauch to give the Utes a 3-0 lead.
The Cougar attack was forced to take over the next coach, Cove Cove, from Provo, and weaved 40 yards for the Utes to take control of BYU 33. The Utes were stopped in the fourth and third rows when Dayan Ghanwoloku leveled Tyler Huntley.
By the end of the first quarter, BYU had dominated Utah in total offense, 91-44.
The Cougars fed on that momentum and ran 59 yards to tie the score on a 32-yard placement by Jake Oldroyd, while he remained 14:15 in the second quarter.
Four minutes later, Bradlee Anae, Utah's all-America defensive lineman, knocked over Wilson, who started a misguided pass that was cashed by Bernard, who had 58 yards for a touch. The PAT did not manage to score 9-3 for the Utes.
BYU responded with a 55-yard drive that allowed Oldroyd to score 37 yards.
At that time, the Couguars had advanced the Utes in total offense, between 174 and 54 years, but were led by a shot to the basket.
