The United States experienced its deadliest avalanche week in more than a century when 15 people were killed in natural disasters last week.

The deadly period from Jan. 30 to Feb. 6 was the worst since 1910, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

It included avalanches in Utah, Colorado, Montana, California, Alaska, and New Hampshire.

“It’s been a tough week for a lot of people in our community, in Colorado and across the country,” the center said in a Facebook post announcing this grim milestone.

Several deaths were caused by a single avalanche in Utah, Alaska and Colorado.

The most recent in Utah killed four skiers in Millcreek Canyon on Saturday. Four other skiers survived the ordeal.

Three backcountry skiers died in an avalanche Feb. 1 in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

Four people were initially trapped, but other members of the group managed to free a skier, who had minor injuries, authorities said.
