AKRON, Ohio – A little girl died Sunday after being attacked by at least one dog at a home in Akron, police said.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. at a house on the 300 block of Westmoreland Street in the Firestone Park neighborhood, Akron Police spokesperson Lt. Michael Miller said. Responders found a seriously injured 16-month-old girl at home.

She was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, where she died, Miller said.

Investigators learned that there had been a fight between two adults at the house. Neither the man nor the woman involved in the argument is the girl’s parents. During the argument, at least one of the dogs in the house – described as pit bulls by Akron police – “got restless” and mutilated the baby, Miller said.

The Summit County medical examiner will perform an autopsy on the little girl, Miller said. His name has not yet been made public.

City animal control took the dogs out of the house after the incident, Miller said.

The investigation into the girl’s death is ongoing.
