Mickey Mantle is back in the record books.

A 1952 Mantle baseball card became the most expensive sports card of all time, selling for $ 5.2 million, the PWCC Marketplace announced Thursday.

The Topps card, rated PSA 9 based on the card scoring system, blew off the previous record of $ 3.94 million, set in August for a rookie card signed Mike Trout 2009 – only one of which was created.

As for the Mantle card, only three can remain in good condition.

Rob Gough, actor and entrepreneur, bought the card.

“The Topps Mantle of 1952 is the holy grail of sports cards,” Gough said. “I have dreamed of owning a 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps ever since I collected cards. This is the Mona Lisa of sports cards and I was looking for this high profile example by talking to industry experts, dealers, auction houses, friends and am delighted to now be the proud owner of this iconic map.

“Based on our research, this is the finest 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 9 in existence,” Jesse Craig, director of business development at PWCC Marketplace, said in a press release.

The Mantle Card’s exorbitant value is due in part to the fact that in addition to being the rookie card of Yankee legend, it comes from Topps’ first annual set – many of whom were tossed into the Hudson River eight years over. late after not sell.

Mantle’s record is also part of a sports memorabilia boom that took off last year and continued into 2021.
