Monterey's Car Week is a time for the wealthy and their wheels, and this year's auction was no exception.
The 1994 McLaren F1, which cost between $ 21 million and $ 23 million, was the most expensive car to be auctioned this year. It ended up being auctioned for $ 19.8 million, making it both the most expensive McLaren ever sold at auction, according to The Drive, and the most expensive car sold this year at auction.
It's one of only two F1s to have been modified in post-production according to LM specifications, which included a series of upgrades based on the McLaren race car, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The second, a 1998 model, was auctioned in 2015 for $ 13.75 million.
The most expensive car from last year's Monterey auction was a Ferrari GTO 250 from 1962, which had broken the record of $ 48.4 million.
According to RM Sotheby's, the auction house in charge of the supercar, only 64 of the 106 McLaren F1s built were road cars. This specific construction, however, includes a GTR racing engine that gives the car its 680 horsepower, according to Robb Report. This is also what has given McLaren its multiple victories in the race, including the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours.
