2.8 million Wisconsinites fully vaccinated against COVID-19

MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – The latest figures from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services show 2.8 million Wisconsinians are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. That’s 48.1% of the total population and 58.8% of adults.

Wisconsin is approaching 3 million people receiving at least one vaccine injection. By our calculations, at our current rate, the state could hit that mark by the end of July, but the pace has slowed, as we reported. We are about 40,000 people away from this milestone. So far, 50.9% of the state’s population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, including 61.9% of the adult population. This includes 65.3% women and 57.6% men.

DHS reports that less than 8,300 doses of the vaccine have been distributed so far this week. DHS says last week 27,386 doses were given, which is the fewest since the week of December 20 – which is also a holiday week and just a week after vaccinations started and who was eligible for a vaccine was severely restricted.

So far, only Brown, Door, Menominee and Outagamie counties have vaccinated more than 50% of their residents. Door County is the only one to be fully vaccinated in the majority of its population.

DHS added a interactive map of its COVID-19 vaccination site which breaks down the county’s vaccination rates by community, school district, census tract or postal code. For example, overall, over 50% of residents of Outagamie County have received at least one dose of a vaccine. The map shows metropolitan areas with vaccination rates of 50%, 70% or more, while two-thirds of the county – rural areas north of Fox Valley – have vaccination rates of 40% or less.

  • 12-15: 29.3% received one dose (+0.2) / 25.0% completed (+0.3)
  • 16-17: 38.0% received one dose (+0.1) / 34.5% completed (+0.2)

After an increase in the average of new coronavirus cases, the 7-day moving average increased only slightly, from 138 to 139 cases per day. The Department of Health Services says the latest test results have confirmed 169 new cases. The positivity rate – the percentage of all positive tests – was flat at 1.7% after jumping four tenths of a percentage point on Tuesday. It has increased by a percentage point since the end of June.

State health officials say the most contagious delta variant of the coronavirus is likely linked to the rise in COVID-19 cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the delta variant is responsible for 51% of recent coronavirus cases nationwide.

Currently, DHS says the spread of the virus is high in 2 counties – Dunn and Rusk counties in northwestern Wisconsin. Viral activity is low in 18 counties and moderate in 52. We expect the weekly disease activity update later Wednesday or Thursday.

Wisconsin still has an average of 2 deaths from COVID-19 each day. Five deaths from COVID-19 have been reported to the state since the last report, including people from Manitowoc and Oconto counties. None of the five have occurred in the past 30 days, so they are not counted towards the 7-day average.

DHS reports that another 18 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment in the past 24 hours, well below our estimated 7-day average of 30 admissions per day. Taking into account new admissions, discharges and deaths, there are 97 COVID-19 currently in hospitals, including 28 in intensive care. That’s 2 fewer in intensive care and 3 fewer patients overall than Tuesday. No changes have been reported among hospitals in the Northeast Health Region, which have reported 8 COVID-19 patients, including 2 in intensive care, in the past 3 days. Conditions also remained unchanged at Fox Valley hospitals, which are treating 2 patients for COVID-19, none of them in intensive care.

February 5, 2020 to July 14, 2021

  • 614,243 confirmed cases of coronavirus
  • 32,580 hospitalizations (5%)
  • 7,365 deaths (1.20%)
  • 2,612 cases still active (<1%)
  • 603,892 considered recovered (98%)

Health officials are encouraging people to continue their mitigation efforts if they are not vaccinated, including wearing masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing. There is debate in the medical community as to whether those vaccinated should continue with these mitigation efforts as well, arguing that there is no harm but potential benefits in doing so.

* As of July 2, the Michigan Department of Health only updates information on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Wisconsin Hospital Association do not update reports on weekends.

** Cases and deaths are from state COVID-19 reports, which may differ from local health department numbers. The Wisconsin DHS reports cases of all health departments within a county, including tribal, municipal, and county health departments; county websites cannot. Additionally, public health departments update their data at different times, while DHS freezes the numbers it receives at the same time each day to compile the afternoon report.
