American Airlines says two women were arrested Thursday after verbally and physically assaulting other passengers and crew on a hijacked flight to Phoenix.

The airline said the flight was traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Los Angeles when it was diverted due to an altercation with an in-flight customer around 5:15 p.m.

After the flight arrived in Phoenix, local law enforcement abducted and arrested two female passengers, later identified as 30, Kelly Pichardo and Leeza Rodriguez, 29, for allegedly verbally and physically assaulting other customers and crew members.

Police in Phoenix said the two women used racist slurs when a passenger asked them to stop using foul language.

Pichardo allegedly spat on the man who then began to record the two women. Officers say that was when Rodriguez slapped the man’s hand to prevent him from recording them.

American Airlines officials said “their behavior was disturbing and unacceptable, and they have been placed on our internal waste list pending further investigation.”

Rodriguez was convicted of disorderly conduct and Pichardo was convicted of assault and disorderly conduct

The flight continued to LAX from Los Angeles and arrived without further incident.
