2 deaths, unknown number disappeared after a tornado hit El Reno, Oklahoma

At least two people have died and an unknown number of people are missing after a tornado reportedly passed through El Reno, Oklahoma, and hit a hotel, a mobile home park and several other buildings on Saturday night. .

Andrew Skidmore, Emergency Officer for the Canadian County of Oklahoma, confirmed both deaths.

"The search and rescue is continuing, the National Guard will report in an hour, an unknown number are still missing, two people are dead," he told ABC News. "We called all resources available for help."

The video of the scene showed serious damage to the hotel, an American Budget Value Inn.

"To our knowledge, there is no one in the rubble," said hotel owner, Ramesh Patel, at KOCO, a subsidiary of ABC Oklahoma.

The woman who worked in the office broke her leg, according to the owner of the hotel.

"We absolutely had a traumatic event here in El Reno," said Mayor Matt White. "We had an incident where a tornado hit a mobile home park, a hotel and several businesses."

White has asked people to stay away from the area while search and rescue personnel continue to pick up debris from the hotel and trailer park.

"I think that El Reno, in Oklahoma, needs a lot of prayers – it's a traumatic experience," White said.

"None of this is easy, we are all shaken," he added.

The Union City Police Department described this situation as a "very serious situation" involving "serious injury and death."

"Please pray for the people affected by these storms as well as the emergency services workers involved in this ongoing rescue," police said in a statement posted on Facebook. "This is an unfortunate example of how quickly these types of storms can develop from a simple storm to a murderous tornado of supercells.

The tornado that hit El Reno follows a very active week in bad weather in the Southern Plains. From Monday to Thursday, 104 tornadoes were reported in eight states – Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Maryland.

Three people were killed Thursday in Golden City, Missouri, while a tornado was crossing the area. The state capital, Jefferson City, about three hours northeast, also suffered severe damage the same night as a result of a tornado, but no one was killed.

At least four other people were also killed in storms, including sudden floods, in the central United States this week.
