Two people were injured and a suspect died after a shooting at Redondo Beach Pier on Wednesday evening, authorities confirmed.

Redondo Beach Police Chief Keith Kauffman said officers responded to a shooting and found two victims.

Officers located a suspect, Kauffman said, and shot him at one point.

Kauffman later told The Times that the suspect was dead.

News helicopters captured images of the man’s body in a rocky area below the pier.

For passers-by, the sound of gunfire first brought confusion, then fear.

A commotion followed the sound of gunfire as people ran, two men who asked to be identified only by first name told The Times.

The men, Eduardo and Miguel, said people were lying on the platform while others shouted or called 911.

Joe Granda had just sat down with his brother for dinner at Tony’s on the Pier when they heard of five high-pitched crunches.

Her brother thought someone was setting off firecrackers, but Granda knew what the noises were.

“I said, ‘No, it’s gunshots,’” he said.

Everyone in the restaurant hid under their tables, Granda said.

About five to ten minutes later, he saw police officers invade the pier and take up positions on the rooftops of restaurants and other establishments.

Granda said he was able to see a man who he said was the gunman, climb over a railing and sink into the rocks under the pier with officers chasing him.

He said he heard about five shots and saw the man trip.

A police helicopter flew overhead and Granda heard someone announce over her loudspeaker: “The suspect is in the rocks”.

The scene remained active Wednesday evening. About three dozen police cars from the Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Torrance and Hawthorne Police Departments were present.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
