A pair of skiers triggered an avalanche near Park City, Utah, on Saturday, leaving one buried, authorities said.
The search for the missing skier was canceled on Saturday evening and was scheduled to resume early Sunday, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
One of the two skiers was able to extricate themselves from the snow and head towards their friend to attempt “rescue efforts” – but was forced to leave due to “extreme avalanche danger in the area,” said the police.
It is not known if the victim was still alive when the rescue was called off, according to Fox 13 in Salt Lake City.
The sheriff’s office declined to release information about the victim until authorities contacted the person, the station said.
