CLEVELAND, Ohio – Think of the conversations we would have today if the Browns were the team leaving Sam Darnold after making him the first pick in the 2018 Draft. Instead, the Jets are the team that took Darnold No.3 – the second quarterback caught in the draft – and traded it on Monday for a package highlighted by a second-round pick next year.
Whether it’s Darnold, a candidate for the Browns at No.1, or the Jets at fault, we’ll find out soon enough, but it’s a sign of the times that this is another team moving so quickly from a very high level. drafted quarterback while the Browns could decide to extend Mayfield this offseason. Even if they don’t, Mayfield will be the team’s Week 1 starter for the third straight season and make his 46th straight regular season start when the Browns open their season – oh, and he’s started two games. playoffs.
