2019 Players Championship Ranking: Tommy Fleetwood co-leads after dazzling first round

The first day of the 2019 players' championship was as entertaining as ever, even from May to March. Tommy Fleetwood and Keegan Bradley are leading, but the rankings are loaded with big names and excellent players. Let's take a look at some of these names as we enter the second day of play at TPC Sawgrass.

T1. Tommy Fleetwood, Keegan Bradley (-7): The Englishman finished second in the green field and was well enough to score seven birdies. Here's the kicker: Fleetwood was a pedestrian 1 under the first nine holes on the easiest side of the course (the nine behind). He then played the first nine of the course in 30 while the field average was over 36. A spectacular close. Bradley was the opposite. He played the ninth in the back of the course in 31 and the front in 34. Together they shot a better ball.

T3. Ben An, Brian Harman (-6): If you had An for the No. 1 on the field in winning shots from tee to green on Thursday, go for it. It's quite a duet and would be an incredibly fun couple late Saturday afternoon. Two silent assassins.

T5. Rory McIlroy, Vaughn Taylor, Ryan Moore (-5): Same story for McIlroy this season. Elite ball, average to above average putting, at the top of the ranking. Rinse, repeat. Perhaps the most notable part of McIlroy's day was a bad pass that he had during his 18th hole (the ninth on the course), where his approach hole reached a top in drainage and exceeded the green. He could not go up and down for a birdie. Could have been quite easily a 66.

T8. Brendan Steele, Rory Sabbatini, JT Poston, Kyle Stanley and Kevin Kisner (-4): The race for the weak Rory is started after the first round. I think Sabbatini also gets bonus points for having the stones that allow him to shoot anything under the shirt while wearing a shirt that looks like a Rorschach test.

Many of the T10 are also intriguing. This number -3 includes former winners Sergio Garcia and Matt Kuchar, as well as Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, Tony Finau, Jon Rahm and Haotong Li. With numbers 1 and 2 playing as two of the most easy course, none of these guys could beat those who preceded them earlier in the day on Friday.
