The Shelby GT500 is a very capable thing in bone stock specs, and let’s not forget, it’s the most powerful production car Ford Motor Company has ever made. But for some people, 760 horsepower is not enough.
A few months ago, StangMode got a ticket in his car – “Hulk “ – to drive at 36 in a 25 mph zone. But this time around, an explosion on the highway was enough to blow up the supercharged V8. In addition to the dangers inherent in running on public roads, there is another issue with the following video. Fast forward to the 10 minute and 40 second mark, and two guys can be seen just inches from a moving lane.
As for the way the engine exploded, five seconds of hard acceleration resulted in a cloud of white smoke at the rear of the vehicle. Thick smoke of this color probably means a coolant leak in the engine, and a possible cause of this problem is a faulty head gasket. The Shelby GT500 continued to smoke after shutting down, both from the engine compartment and the exhaust pipes.
It’s hard to say if we’re looking for a simple fix or a very expensive bill, but we can learn a lesson from this video nonetheless. Or three of them if we are counting the previous don’ts. If you’re looking to add 300 horsepower to an already super-jittery car like the Shelby GT500, be prepared to earn a few extra bucks for more powerful internals that can withstand that kind of abuse.
