White Sox first baseman José Abreu put a fitting finishing touch to his best season by winning the American League’s Most Valuable Player Award in a vote by the Baseball Writers Association on Thursday from America. Abreu is a first-time MVP, adding to a CV that includes three All-Star selections.

Abreu was a huge presence to help the White Sox make their first playoff appearance in 12 years. His seventh season began with signing a three-year, $ 50 million contract to stay in Chicago, and he responded by leading the AL in RBI for a second straight season. Abreu was second in the MLB with 19 home runs and fourth in the AL with a .317 batting average.
José Abreu is the 28th player to win both MVP and Rookie of the Year in his career (including Fred Lynn and Ichiro Suzuki, who both won the same season each).

Abreu finished in the AL’s top 5 in homers, RBIs, batting average, hits (76, first), slugging percentage (.617, first), extra base hits. (34, first), the total of bases (148, first)) and OPS (.987, fifth).
Abreu was also invaluable as a mentor and confidant to the young White Sox stars. His MVP award will fit neatly into a trophy box that already has the 2014 AL Rookie of the Year award.
