Ramses ‘RJ’ Melendez, prospect # 97 of the 247Sports 2021 Composite Rankings, has signed up in Illinois, he told 247Sports.

“I’m going to go to the University of Illinois,” Melendez told 247Sports.

The 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward from Central Pointe Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Fla. Has entered the fight against the Illini on programs including Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Iowa State and Virginia Tech, among others.

“I feel like their style of play suits me very well,” he explained, explaining why he chose Illinois. “Andre Curbelo is a really good point guard and he’s from Puerto Rico so the chemistry is going to be great in college and it’s going to be good for me to prepare for my dreams of playing in the NBA.”

Brad Underwood and Orlando Antigua led the recruiting for Melendez and he said it was their consistency that stood out for him.

“I feel like with the coach [Brad] Underwood and Coach [Orlando] Antigua showed a lot of interest in me, “he said.” They always texted me after games, they texted me how it was and FaceTiming let me see how things were happening. They were still watching me. They weren’t inside and outside, they were still inside. “

As for what he will bring to Champaign, Melendez said he will add versatility.

“I think I can bring a lot with my versatility, my length, I can bring a lot, a lot of good minutes, I do everything,” he said. “I think it will be a great choice for me.”

His coach, Carlos Morales Jr., also noted the type of player Illinois gets at Melendez.

“RJ is a very exciting player to watch, train and see his growth,” said Morales. “It’s amazing to be a part of his development and career so far. He’s just a kid who when he walks on the floor he does so many offensive and defensive things, his scoring ability, his passing ability, his basketball IQ is out of it and I think it’s gonna be very exciting to see him play to the next level and see how he develops and hopefully he makes it to the NBA. “

Melendez is Brad Underwood’s second engagement in the 2021 class by joining Luke goode, a four-star prospect out of Fort Wayne (Ind.) Homestead.

He’s averaging 20.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.8 blocks and 2.4 steals per game with Central Pointe Christian this season.
