2021 Baseball Hall of Fame voting results, updates: will Curt Schilling make the cut?

The 2021 National Baseball Hall of Fame class will be announced during a live broadcast on the MLB network on Tuesday. The broadcast will begin at 6 p.m. ET, and the announcement will be announced shortly thereafter. About 400 longtime members of the Baseball Writers Association of America are expected to vote this year. Here are the scenarios you should know.

Players must appear on 75% of the ballots submitted to be voted into the Hall of Fame and there is a chance that no player will be voted this year. As of Tuesday afternoon, Curt Schilling participated in 74.9% of the public ballots, which currently cover about half of the total ballots submitted. Schilling currently has the highest percentage of vote among eligible players this year.

Historically, non-public ballots reduce a player’s final vote percentage. This has certainly been true with Schilling. Last year he appeared on 73.7 percent of public votes and finished with a final percentage of 70.0 percent. It was 64.7 percent and 60.9 percent the year before, and 57.5 percent and 51.2 percent the year before. Etc., etc.

Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, arguably the greatest hitter and pitcher of their generation, have seen their support stagnate between 50-60% in recent years and are unlikely to be inducted into Cooperstown given their ties to the performance enhancing drugs. . Support for Schilling is on the rise and he has a good chance of being elected at some point.

Of course, this is the penultimate year of the poll for Bonds, Clemens and Schilling. If they are not voted this year, all three will appear on the ballot for the tenth and final time next year. If they are not voted then, their Hall of Fame fate will be passed on to the Eras Committees, which meet every few years to consider unvoted players in my BBWAA.

Todd Helton, Andruw Jones, Jeff Kent, Andy Pettitte, Manny Ramirez, Scott Rolen, Gary Sheffield, Sammy Sosa, Omar Vizquel and Billy Wagner are among the other notables in this year’s Hall of Fame ballot. This is Sosa’s ninth year on the ballot and Kent’s eighth year on the ballot. Anyone else on the ballot has at least three years of eligibility.

If no player is voted this year, it would be the eighth time the BBWAA has not voted a player into the Hall of Fame. This also happened in 1945, 1950, 1958, 1960, 1965, 1971, 1996 and 2013. Although no player was elected at Cooperstown in 2013, eight players on this year’s ballot ultimately did. been voted by the BBWAA.

Even though no players are voted this year, there will be an induction ceremony at Cooperstown in July. Last year’s ceremony was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Hall of Fame class will be honored this summer. Derek Jeter, Ted Simmons, Larry Walker and the late Marvin Miller were elected last year.
