The San Francisco Giants selected right-handed pitcher Will Bednar with the No.14 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft on Sunday night.
Bednar has a proven track record against top competitions and in high pressure situations, having just led Mississippi State to College World Series victory, while also taking the tournament’s best player after having a 1.47 ERA in 18.1 innings.
Now let’s get excited:
Bednar is 6’2, 230 pounds and 21.1 years old. This season – his second at Mississippi State – he had a 3.12 ERA and a 1.061 WHIP while striking out 139 batters in 92.1 innings.
The Giants had more options than most people thought, as many teams ahead of them went through the slot and drafted players who were thrown behind the Giants on most false drafts. But eventually, they joined that trend, as Bednar was ranked # 17 on ESPN’s big chart and # 44 on Fangraphs. Maybe the Giants can go under the lunge with him and open up a bit more flexibility for them in the next few rounds.

Bednar was the Giants’ only pick on Sunday, which covered Round One and Competitive Balance Round A. The Giants will have nine more picks on Monday, which covers rounds # 2 through 10, as well as Competitive Balance Round B The draft ends Tuesday with rounds 11 to 20.
