Despite the reactions online and a bit from presenter Seth Rogen, the 2021 Emmy Awards did not violate coronavirus safety protocols, according to the Los Angeles Department of Health.
Sunday night’s show was picked up online as the crowded ceremony appeared to throw safety precautions to the wind. Very few, if any, masks were worn and social distancing was not in place between groups of people.
When he presented an award early in the night, Rogen compared the event to a “tightly sealed box.” Host Cedric the Entertainer later explained, however, that all participants were vaccinated.
In a statement to Fox News, the Department of Health explained that due to the nature of the event, the crowded venue did not violate any of the suggested safety guidelines.

Despite the implementation of mandatory masks in Los Angeles County – for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people – “exceptions are made for film, television and music productions as additional security changes are made for these controlled interactions” , the department said.
“The Emmy Award Show is a television production, and people appearing on the show are considered performers,” the statement read. “Everyone appearing on or in the audience of the Emmy Award Show has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.”

Additionally, the department was informed that all attendees tested negative for COVID-19 within 48 hours of the event. Likewise, production teams had to be vaccinated or tested negative for the virus twice a week.
“The Emmys contacted public health in advance to share their safety protocols, which exceeded basic requirements for television and film productions,” the organization continued. “Careful planning before major events is essential to ensure that all health and safety requirements are properly taken into account. “

Additionally, a satellite site in England has hosted international stars, including those involved in Netflix’s “The Crown”. Both Olivia Colman and Gillian Anderson have accepted their Hall-Acting Awards.

“Completely vaccinating all participants is one of the most powerful ways to create a safe environment. Testing event participants and crew and optimizing ventilation are additional powerful tools,” the health ministry said. “Public health will continue to review protocols for future major television production events and will prescribe additional safety modifications to mitigate the risk of transmission of COVID-19. “
