2021 Phillies roster: the 4 players Joe Girardi hasn’t used yet

Three players made their Phillies debut on Monday night and two were instrumental in the comeback victory over the Mets.

Brandon Kintzler had five strikeouts, including a huge double in the fourth inning in relief for Matt Moore.

Sam Coonrod recorded six strikeouts with three strikeouts and an average of 97 mph with his fastpitch.

And Matt Joyce made his debut in a successful role, placing third.

The Phillies used 22 of their 26 players in their 4-0 start. The only four who have yet to appear in a match are Chase Anderson, Vince Velasquez, David Hale and Ronald Torreyes.

Anderson, the No. 5 starter, launches this evening against Mets right-hander Marcus Stroman. 4th starter Matt Moore made his debut on Monday and looked sharp for two innings before losing in the next two. He allowed two runs, four goals and four hits with four strikeouts in 3rd innings.

The Phillies have two long men in their box at Vince Velasquez and David Hale, so it was slightly surprising that neither of them got the nod after Moore. It was a big place in this fourth round and manager Joe Girardi went to Kintzler, who has a more trustworthy track record. It was certainly a promising sign for the Phillies that Kintzler and Coonrod had shown an ability to do multiple innings. It just gives them more options for a short start.

Anderson isn’t known for going into games any further, averaging a similar number of innings per start at Velasquez, so it stands to reason we could see one or both of Velasquez and Hale tonight. Keep in mind that the Phillies want to keep Velasquez lying down so he’s a realistic option as a starter in the event of an injury. Ideally, you don’t want him to go from a one inning throw to 60-75 throws.

As for Torreyes, he’s utility here more for his glove and stance versatility than for his bat in pinch situations. His first appearance could come as a late-inning defensive substitute for someone like Alec Bohm if the Phillies have a comfortable lead. The new extra-innning rule lessens some of the importance of the bench attack, as you might only need a pinch or two in any given game. When Andrew Knapp started behind plate on Sunday, JT Realmuto hit the point in the seventh inning. Under normal extra-round rules, Realmuto is likely registered there in case he needs to catch later.
