“I want to thank my trans and non-binary friends and colleagues who engaged with me in difficult conversations who joined me in a dialogue about my character, Jo,” said Patten. “I believe the future of change we need to see on Broadway comes from these kinds of conversations full of honesty, empathy and respect for our common humanity. And I’m so excited to see the action that comes from it and to see where it leads our future as stage performers in this country. “

Small jagged pill Writer Diablo Cody won the Tony Award for Best Musical Book, but did not address the recent controversies.

Patten’s character writing drew criticism from both trans and non-binary communities after the production revised the character named Jo from non-binary in a pre-Broadway staging to a gay cis female character for Broadway. The producers then apologized and described the steps they plan to take to address the issue.
