The conclusion of the 2020-21 PGA Tour regular season came after nearly a year of action with this week’s Wyndham Championship. This is one of the more interesting tournaments to watch all season long, as players can move in and out of the top 125 in the FedEx Cup rankings and hold on (or lose) their cards with the smallest margin. There’s a lot at stake this week at Sedgefield Country Club as the regular season wraps up and the playoffs begin to take shape.

Three things to know
1. The Zalatoris problem: The world No.29 player is playing the Wyndham Championship this week, and it may be his last tournament of the season. Will Zalatoris does not have full PGA Tour status despite having a terrific season, and due to the way the current system is set up, he will not make the FedEx Cup qualifiers next week unless he won this week and won his PGA Tour card. . It will have little bearing on his status as a future member of the PGA Tour or the tournaments he takes part in next season, but it would be a disappointment for him to have to give up the monstrous money at stake next month as well as a fired to secure one of the last Ryder Cup spots on the U.S. team.
2. On the edge: Here is the non-exhaustive list of golfers playing at Wyndham who are also trying to reach the top 125 (or stay there) and qualify for the playoffs. Not all of them will lose their cards, but there are some huge names here who could be out looking for the Northern Trust next weekend. Probably the most intriguing is Rickie Fowler, who has made every FedEx Cup playoff since 2010 (and finished in the top 10 in three of them). He won’t lose his PGA Tour card, but he needs a big performance at Sedgefield to have a start time next week at Liberty National. There are signs that this is possible. He ranks 16th in this area for strokes won in his last 20 rounds and has made three straight cuts (and five of six) after a spring full of starts and saves.
3. The Webb Opportunity: Webb Simpson has a lot at stake next month. Not only is he one of the few currently outside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup rankings who can win the FedEx Cup, he is currently 13th in the U.S. Ryder Cup rankings. After a summer in which he didn’t make much noise, in part due to an injury that kept him out of the Wells Fargo Championship, Simpson landed a pair of top 20s in a row at the Open Championship and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitation. He’s still a threat at Sedgefield, and with a bit of momentum now, I expect him to keep him in the playoffs.

Land classification
Wyndham’s land is almost always interesting, and it has some nice names this year. Hideki Matsuyama, Webb Simpson, Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, Adam Scott, Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Wolff, Justin Rose and Zalatoris will all be doing it this week. And while only a few of them are having very good years, all of them will be nice draws for fans in this regular season finale, with some of them vying for a playoff berth. Category B-
