2022 Ford Edge switches to all-wheel drive only according to report

According to Ford Authority, this vehicle is undergoing a major transmission change for 2022. Sources indicate that the Edge will only be offered with all-wheel drive in the next model year. If this is true, this is a historic change for the nameplate, which is available with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive pretty much across its model lineup.

We do not know why Ford would do that Subaru-esque change, and the automaker didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but that’s good news for people who live in areas that get snow and ice during the colder months. . Even a “soft-roader” like the Edge can be virtually invincible in these adverse conditions if equipped with all-wheel drive and a good set of winter tires.

Switching to all-wheel drive only with the Edge, however, is not indicative of a broader shift in strategy at the automaker, even if the Bronco and Bronco Sport SUVs are only sold with four corner pull. Oddly enough, with Edge’s big brother, the Explorer, Ford is doing a bit of the opposite. For 2022, the Explorer will be available with a ST Line package which includes all the looks of the sporty ST model with a more efficient four-cylinder engine instead of a twin-turbo V6 plus rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive. If you still want the Explorer ST full of grease, it’s also now available with rear-wheel drive for 2022.

It’s pretty much the same story with the exciting new Maverick compact truck. The base model that comes with a hybrid powertrain is front-wheel drive only. If you need a little more scoot, a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is also offered. It comes standard with front-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is available for a sizable extra.
