2022 Toyota Tundra receives a welcome dose of refinement and new technologies

Did you know that the outgoing second-generation Toyota Tundra is one of the oldest vehicles currently on sale in the United States? Well, that is about to change with the third generation 2022 Toyota Tundra arriving in dealerships this fall.

And thanks to Toyota, we already know what the new truck will look like when it physically appears in a few months. But now Toyota has revealed more images of the 2022 Tundra, especially what to expect when you step inside.

A few weeks ago, Toyota released an interior image of the new Tundra’s panoramic sunroof and power rear window. The latter is unique since it is a feature that is not seen much in modern trucks or SUVs. And it looks like the Tundra has a few other goodies in store to follow other mainstays like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

First, the 2022 Toyota Tundra will have flashy red perforated seats, especially in the TRD Pro finish. It will also have a wireless smartphone charger to complement the truck’s new touchscreen infotainment system. But the biggest draw is a rotary dial with four buttons to control the riding modes: Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Downhill Assist Control (DAS), Crawl / Tow / Haul and Drive.

Toyota has yet to unveil the powertrain for its new 2022 Tundra. But if the all-new Land Cruiser is any indication, we expect the new Tundra to inherit the TNGA-F platform from the old one, its 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. Toyota won’t be selling the 2022 Land Cruiser in America (for now, at least), but at least we’re getting some of the automaker’s new all-conquering luxury SUV perks.

We expect the smaller V6 to pack a punch. While the outgoing Tundra’s 5.7-liter V8 can develop 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, the new twin-turbo V6 produces 409 horsepower and up to 479 pound-feet of torque. The numbers may change, but at least Toyota isn’t shorting the 2022 Tundra (in horsepower and torque) despite having a smaller engine.

Not everyone is a fan of the massive front grille design of the new Tundra, but the overall profile remains similar to the old model. And from the way Toyota is slowly building the hype, we expect to be back to reveal more about what the new Tundra has to offer.
