LANSING, Michigan (WXYZ) – Several shipments of the Moderna vaccine arriving in Michigan have been compromised due to a storage issue, Michigan state police said in a statement Tuesday.

A total of 21 shipments from McKesson Corporation, a pharmaceutical distributor, were affected during transit on Sunday, January 17. It was reported that the temperature of the consignments was out of range and became too cold. Now McKesson is investigating the cause.
This delay adds to problems already with the distribution process in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.
Trying to get the vaccine was not easy, trying to get a spot really depends on the luck of the draw. People who want the vaccine are frustrating and wonder when they can get it.
“I can’t even pass. I haven’t even spoken to anyone, ”said Karie Wilson, a teacher at Merritt Academy in Macomb County.
Wilson tried to get vaccinated as soon as the state entered Phase 1B.
“I called 163 times today and never even got the recording,” she says.
Wilson says it’s frustrating not being able to book an hour, but it’s even more frustrating not knowing when an hour is going to open.
“There aren’t enough appointments for everyone eligible to get the vaccine right now,” said De Joneigh Khaldun, medical director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr Khaldun appeared on 7 UpFront on Tuesday to talk about the impact of the Moderna Expedition, which was ruined due to issues with temperature control.
“So all of these shipments were re-shipped with McKesson today and we know they’re coming to these 21 locations,” said. “I will just say the biggest problem we have is that there just aren’t enough vaccines for everyone.”
Karie Wilson says she understands counties aren’t getting the doses of vaccine they want, but says something else needs to be done.
“We can’t even get into a waiting list or anything,” Wilson said. the process, we’re in line to basically get a dose. “
Dr Khaldun says they have been in contact with the Biden administration and have requested more vaccines from Michigan. We will wait and see.
McKesson is now repackaging additional vaccines for shipment as replacement doses. The majority of the 21 compromised shipments were returned Monday evening and the rest will be sent on Tuesday.
The company says six more shipments were held up to verify there was no problem with the vaccine. This can cause a delay in scheduled vaccinations.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has been notified.
“We are committed to accelerating vaccine delivery as we work to achieve our goal of vaccinating 70% of Michiganders over the age of 16 as quickly as possible with the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, in a statement released Tuesday. . “While it is unfortunate that this vaccine cannot be used, we are pleased that the safeguards put in place to ensure the integrity of the vaccine have worked. This is the first report of a potentially compromised vaccine in shipment to Michigan and we are working quickly with the distributor to have the replacement vaccine shipped. “
