Health officials in New Jersey said 23 people had contracted hepatitis A at a Morris County golf club.
According to the Morris County Health Management Office, patients contracted the disease from a food processor at the Mendham Golf and Tennis Club. It is thought that this happened between the 9th and the 30th of June.
Of the 23 patients, one is seriously ill, according to officials.
Hepatitis A is spread mainly through close contact person-to-person or contaminated food. Health officials said the club informed its members of the potential risk on July 5th.
Officials said that the food handler had been removed from work and that other food handlers had been tested to determine if they had contracted the disease.
Health officials also advise all those who dine at the club, when the food attendant was potentially infectious, to seek a vaccine or post-exposure drug to prevent illness after exposure.
Symptoms of hepatitis A can include fatigue, sudden nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine and intense itching.
Anyone who has had these symptoms of dinner at the club between June 9 and June 30 should contact their health care provider.
