As many as 246 Michigan residents who were “fully vaccinated” against COVID-19 then tested positive for the deadly virus – three of whom have died, according to a new report.
The group – whose cases were reported between Jan. 1 and March 31 – tested positive at least two weeks after receiving the last dose of the inoculation, a health official told the Detroit News.
“Some of these people could ultimately be excluded from this list due to continuing to test positive for a recent infection before being fully vaccinated,” said Lynn Sutfin, spokesperson for the State Department of Health and from Social Services, in an email Monday.
“These cases are under further scrutiny to determine if they meet other CDC criteria for determining a potential breakthrough, including the absence of a positive antigen or test. PCR less than 45 days before the positive post-vaccination test, ”said Sutfin.
“In general, these people were more likely to be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic compared to those vaccinated,” she said, adding that hospitalization data was available for 117 of the cases, while 129 were incomplete.
“Of the 117 with hospitalization data entered, 11 were hospitalized, 103 were not hospitalized and three are reported as unknown,” Sutfin said.
The three people who died were all 65 years of age or older and two “were within three weeks of completing vaccination,” she said.
“While the majority of the population develops full immunity within 14 days of completing their vaccine series, a small proportion appears to take longer to mount a full antibody response. CDC is actively working to better understand the risk characteristics of this group, ”she added.
Recently released data has emerged as cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, which leads the country in new cases by population, continue to rise and authorities are looking to boost the shots.
The state surpassed 700,000 cases on Monday, according to the Detroit News.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer last week said she was increasing the state’s target from 50,000 shots administered per day to 100,000 per day.
