Over 295,000 books. raw beef products from meat supplier Greater Omaha Packing have been recalled due to E. coli contamination concerns.
The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said on Thursday that dozens of products had been recalled after routine sampling confirmed that E. coli had been detected in one of its products.
The recall concerns products manufactured on July 13 and bearing the establishment number “EST. 960A ”in the inspection mark of the Ministry of Agriculture. FSIS said products have been distributed to processors in Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota.
E. coli infections are the result of food or water contaminated with fecal material, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Foods and liquids most likely to be contaminated with E. coli include raw milk, soft cheeses that use raw milk, and unpasteurized apple cider, although other products like meat or lettuce can also be contaminated with the bacteria.
The CDC noted that although most strains of E. coli are not harmful, others can cause urinary tract infections, diarrhea, pneumonia and other illnesses.
In total, approximately 295,236 pounds of beef products have been affected by the recall, which affects various cuts of beef, including trimmings, brisket and rib eye.
FSIS said it had not received any reports of people reacting badly to potentially contaminated products.
