3 biggest performances of the second preparatory game

The New York Giants finished the second season of their pre-season with an impressive 32-13 victory over the Chicago Bears. This victory allowed them to climb to 2-0, while they were previously beating their rivals in the city, the New York Jets. The game gave rise to some great individual performances. Here are three, in no particular order.

3. Daniel Jones – QB

Yes, Daniel Jones has returned the ball twice via fumbles. Yes, these are inexcusable mistakes. But, they can be settled. What the Giants and their followers were looking for was a competent quarterback worthy of choice number 6, and that's what they got on Friday.

Jones went 11-for-16 for 161 yards and a score in his limited action. On his last trip, he placed a crossfade in the corner to score a touchdown, which could not be better placed.

What Jones has shown is that (a) his arm is strong enough, (b) he can be advanced and (c) he can throw the ball with tact and precision. He also seemed comfortable working from the pocket. Although his fumbles needed to be corrected, this was the second consecutive week in a row for the rookie.

2. Grant Haley – CB

Unregistered free agent for Penn State in 2018, cornerback Grant Haley had a strong rookie season. He left little doubt that he would not continue in the Giants' win over the Bears.

Although Haley's stats do not reveal any outstanding performance (no tackle, no interception, nothing), Pro Football Focus was pretty good on his game.

In reality, PFF ranked as the best New York player in the game, whether it's an attack or a defense. He posted a score of 76.2, was targeted four times on 20 covers, had a passing error and allowed a six-yard reception.

They said in their post-match ReFocused article:

"Penn State's former half-half Penn Haley scored a forced failure and left very little chance of an outstanding performance against the Bears on Friday night."

The Giants have spent considerable resources to reorganize their cornerback group, including selecting three in the 2019 NFL draft. But a rough raw diamond can be a cornerstone.

1. The racing game

I cheat. But that's not a bad thing. The three running backs that played (Rod Smith, Jon Hilliman and Paul Perkins) looked really good. They can boast of their abilities, but also the offensive line that has opened holes all night long.

Rod Smith started the game. The 27-year-old has gone through artificial holes en route to ten races for 42 yards. He recorded the race in depth with a 17 yard scamper where he avoided several tackles. But it was not the star.

Paul Perkins ranked as PFFSecond best offensive player of the match for the Giants. Perkins finished with six runs for 35 yards. He had electric air and it was hard to miss his elusive footwork. Perkins also caught two balls for 30 yards, most coming from an unlikely win in the first test on a screen.

Jon Hilliman was the bell on foot to end the match. He received the bulk of rush attempts (16) and finished with 56 yards and a score. Hilliman's touchdown came to an impasse where he cut to escape the defenders, then stalled smoothly and cleared his way to the goal line.

In total, the Giants recorded 133 yards and a score with their backup halfbacks. Without Saquan Barkley and Wayne Gallman, the hasty attack did not fail, a testimony from the bench members and an improved line of attack.
