The Steelers were able to solve their defenseman’s depth problem with Melvin Ingram. Here are three more names they could explore before training camp.
Most fans are delighted that the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to land Melvin Ingram in free agency. At the start of the season with TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith as their starters looked like a solid couple, depth was desperately lacking. Ingram’s presence doesn’t solve that problem, but provides excellent safety in the event of injury and should give Pittsburgh a helping hand.
The Steelers shouldn’t stop there. While they have helped make up for the losses of many players this offseason, there is still a lot of work to be done. The team still has plenty of room to perform a few more moves. If this team are serious about going all out in a fast-closing Super Bowl window, here are three other players they should be chasing after taking down Melvin Ingram.
FS Malik Hooker
Malik Hooker has been a fan favorite from the start, and it’s not hard to see why. The former first-round draft pick was an electrifying prospect coming out of Ohio State with incredibly rare playing ability at the gate. In 13 games, a red-shirted freshman in 2016, Hooker wowed with 7 interceptions for an outrageous 181-yard INT return – taking three of them home for scores.
It appeared that Hooker was on track to continue his remarkable success in the NFL. After registering 3 interceptions in just 7 games, Hooker landed on IR in Week 8. Injury has been Hooker’s career story ever since, but the young safety still had 7 interceptions in his. 36 first games in the NFL.
For the Steelers, Hooker would likely find a way to get onto the pitch early. Although he was always a free safety (the same position as Minkah Fitzpatrick), Pittsburgh wouldn’t be averse to playing them together – especially if Terrell Edmunds started to struggle. The Steelers would likely find ways to bring Hooker onto the field in three safety sets or use him as an additional defensive back in their dime defense. This, of course, would depend on his health and whether or not all of his medicals were checked.
