Detroit police announced that three police officers were recovering, including one who had been shot dead, following an incident in the west of the city.

Chief of Police James Craig said at a press conference Sunday that police intercepted a vehicle around 11:40 pm. Saturday after witnessing the speed and the wrong direction. After being stopped, the driver turned the vehicle over and stopped two police officers between the car and their police car.

Craig said that the man had then fled on foot and opened fire on the police, hitting an officer. He added that the police fired back and hit the gunman five times before entering a house where he was subsequently arrested.

Craig said the shooter is currently in critical condition. He said the three officers are in a stable state.
