3 things about Luke Danes that would never fly today

Gilmore girls Fans widely agree that Luke Danes was the perfect guy for Lorelai Gilmore. The character, as a whole, is widely liked by viewers. Luke, however, had times when he wasn’t a great guy and more than a few times when he said completely inappropriate things. At least three things about Luke Danes wouldn’t turn out well if the series were filmed today.

Luke’s disdain for breastfeeding in public would no longer be acceptable

Gilmore girls Fans can accept that Luke was snappy and didn’t seem to like a lot of people, but his disdain for breastfeeding in public would be a serious issue today. During one scene, Luke complains that a group of parents and their children show up at the restaurant and take up the much-needed space. His tirade was cut short when he realized that one of the mothers in the group was breastfeeding.

Luke’s panic might have been considered normal in the early 2000s, but it’s worth it today. First, he shamed a mother for doing the very natural job of feeding her child. Then he was so scared of the activity that he asked Lorelai to find a way to get her to stop.

Luke was very homophobic

For all of his qualities, Luke displayed moments of toxic masculinity and homophobia. In Season 3, he made fun of Kirk Gleason for carrying a dog carrier bag. He calls the bag a “gay bag” in an attempt to mock Kirk. Later in Season 4, Luke makes a comment which, once again, indicates that he has an issue with the LGBTQ community over the phone with a wheat supplier.

To be fair, Luke wasn’t the only character who was incredibly homophobic. Lorelai made similar jokes and disturbing comments during the show’s run. Reddit users point out that mean comments about the LGBTQ community are rife throughout the series.

Luke was possessive and controlling

While many fans believe Luke was the perfect knight in shining armor for Lorelai, he was possessive and controlling if you take a closer look at their relationship. His attempts to control what Lorelai and Rory ate were initially seen as in a good mood. Fans took it as a sign that he cared about the duo. If you look at him in a different light, this is the first indication that he was in control and a little possessive.

Later, when Luke and Lorelai got together, he tried to control his relationship with other people. When Luke heard a message from Christopher Hayden on Lorelai’s answering machine, he got angry. It’s understandable, but his admission that he would never agree with Christopher in Lorelai’s life is quite possessive. Christopher and Lorelai shared a child, and therefore Luke had to be okay with the couple having a relationship.
