A 3-year-old boy was killed on Monday when he fell into a grease trap behind a Tim Hortons in upstate New York, authorities said.
The toddler walked near the trap – which looks like a sewer plate and overcomes the tank where used cooking oil is collected – behind a Tim Hortons in Rochester around 11 am, the time of day. East, the police said.
When the first responders arrived, the boy was removed and was on the back with an adult practicing CPR, the police said.
The child was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at noon.
"Our heart goes out to this child's family who had to endure this unimaginable tragedy," said Rochester Police investigator Rick Camp.
The police are investigating how the lid is loosened, allowing the child to fall.
A Tim Hortons representative could not be reached immediately for a comment on Monday.
