A 3-year-old boy from Kansas has died after what police called an “unexpected drug reaction” given to him during a dental procedure, according to a local report. Abiel Zapata-Valenzuela, from Scott City, has reportedly been to the dentist to have his teeth extracted.
“The last thing I said to him was because he cried because he felt the needle and stuff, so I said, ‘Grandpa, you’ll be fine.’ I’m like ‘You’re fine’ and as a mother you feel like I missed it, “Nancy Valenzuela, the boy’s mother, told KWCH.com.
A spokesperson for Witchita Police told KAKE.com authorities were called around 8 a.m. on July 6 regarding a child who was unresponsive while receiving dental treatment.

“The child is believed to have had an unexpected reaction to the medications provided during his dental procedures,” Agent Trevor Macy told KAKE.com.
Her mother told KWCH.com that Abiel’s heart stopped beating at some point during the procedure.
In a statement provided to KAKE.com, Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry, where Abiel was being treated, said she was “devastated by the death” of Abiel and that staff were praying for the family.
“Like Abiel’s family, we too want to understand how this tragic event could have happened,” the statement said. “Our office has never experienced an incident like this, and we had no reason to expect this procedure to be anything but routine.”
The statement thanked the EMS responders who arrived a few minutes after the call.

“I didn’t expect to come out of there childless,” Valenzuela told KWCH.com. “I don’t think any parent, any parent expects to come out of a place where you feel safe … but we did.”
